DVR & RECORDING BASICS

Understanding digital video recording systems

What is a Security DVR?

DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder. A Security DVR takes video from digital or analog cameras and records it in digital format on a hard drive. It records high quality video, maintenance free, for weeks or months.

What is a video capture card?

A video capture card is a component inside the Security DVR system that captures signals from cameras and stores the video on the hard drive.

DVR vs VCR - What's the difference?

A Security DVR is digital and records to a hard drive with high quality. A VCR is analog and records to tape with lower quality and limited storage.

How many hours can the DVR store?

Storage depends on camera count, frame rate (FPS), and hard drive space. Our systems typically provide several weeks of archive on motion detection mode.

How does motion detection work?

Motion detection works through DVR software by recording when pixels change in the image. Most DVRs offer adjustable sensitivity settings.

What happens during power outage?

Most DVRs restart automatically when power returns. We recommend an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for backup power and surge protection.

REMOTE ACCESS & CONNECTIVITY

Viewing and managing your system remotely

Can I view video locally?

Yes, you can view live and recorded video directly on the DVR system.

Can I view video remotely?

Yes, most of our DVR systems are Internet-enabled. View live and recorded video from anywhere with Internet access.

What internet speed do I need?

Basic DSL or cable internet will work for most applications.

Can multiple users view at once?

Yes, multiple users can view simultaneously. However, bandwidth is shared between viewers, which may affect video quality.

Can I hear audio remotely?

Yes, with an optional audio module, you can listen to live and recorded audio from anywhere via Internet.

Can the DVR send alerts?

Yes, many of our Security DVRs have alarm notification capabilities.

CAMERAS & INSTALLATION

Camera selection and setup questions

How many cameras do I need?

This depends on your area size and layout. On average, we recommend one camera per 1,000 square feet.

Can I use existing cameras?

Yes, you can use existing CCTV cameras. Simply connect them to the DVR system, which replaces your old VCR.

Can I zoom with cameras?

Yes, with Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras for optical zoom, or use digital zoom available on most DVRs.

What is Lux measurement?

Lux measures light levels:
• Direct sunlight: 100,000+ lux
• Office lighting: 200-400 lux
• Twilight: 10 lux
• Full moon: 0.1 lux
Lower lux cameras work better in dark conditions.

What operating system does DVR use?

Our standalone Security DVRs use Linux-based operating systems for reliability and security.
